DATADOG INTERACTIVE UPDATE 06.2007

In 1997, my sister, dad, aunt, uncle, and four cousins all under the age of 12 packed an RV full of food, games, maps, pillows, blankets, and CDs. We headed off into the sunrise and set forth on our journey to our destination, The Vee Bar Guest Ranch in Laramie, Wyoming!
Along the way, we stopped at all the hot spots - Custer National Park, Black Hills and Badlands,Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Wall Drug, and the Corn Palace. We also took a detour and snuck in white water rafting in Colorado! We knew we were inching closer to our destination when we drove down a desolate rocky road with tumble weed rolling through!
The ranch was nestled perfectly in the valley of mountains with cabins sporadically placed throughout. The barn was full of beautiful horses that soon were to be assigned to each one of us for the week. The aroma of home cooking filled the air and the sight of cowboys seemed to be out of a dream! The week was filled with activities such as horse back riding, hay rides, dancing in the saloon, and relaxing on the lazy river.
The best time of all was the day we road our horses through the mountains to a campsite with tee-pees. We gathered around the fire, sang songs, and made some tasty food. We even had the chance to brand our shoes! We spent the night under a breath taking star lit sky while our horses grazed. In the morning we saddled up and herded cattle! What an experience! I have never been on a vacation that brought tears to my eyes as I drove away - all the memories and experiences were priceless!

Nothing says summer like Rhythm and Booms. I don't remember the last time we took a summer vacation; we tend to save those days of escape for the dreary days of winter. However to me, nothing says summer like spending the 4th of July in Madison.
Trekking through our old "stomping grounds", shopping on State Street, pizza at Gino's, a cold beer or a Babcock ice cream cone at the Union Terrace, and a hike along the lakeshore path timed just right for viewing the annual musical fireworks treat that is Rhythm and Booms. Partially because that's where my husband proposed and partially because it reminds me of those last few lazy days before classes started again, I know that's where I'd pick to spend some time this summer.

Washington State
Great food, wine, music and natural scenery; four items that I love. Roll them up into a vacation destination and you have Washington State. Yes, Seattle is nice, but drive through the Cascades and you can find the nations up-and-coming wine country; Yakima Valley. Known for its delicious Rieslings with apple and pear undertones, the Valley is a wealth of privately owned and operated wineries and vineyards. For miles you can drive farm to farm tasting the product of the passionate vintners. In the evening, plan a trip to the Columbia River Gorge to watch the sunset. Better yet, catch a concert at the Gorge Amphitheatre, nestled on the edge of the river’s canyon where you can dance the night away.
I love this vacation spot so much it’s no wonder my husband and I honeymooned there.

My Garage
My favorite summer vacation spot? My garage and spilling out onto the driveway, tinkering with my classic 73' VW THING or restored 91' Mitsubishi 4x4 with iTunes blaring. Then crusing the lakefront or the backroads and small towns of Wisconsin.

Block Island, Rhode Island
I have been going out to the island pretty much every summer of my life. My grandparents bought a WWII bunker with a mock "silo" tower back in the '40's and converted it, ever so slowly, into a summer haven. Back in the day, Block Island was pretty remote without many tourists. Nowadays, it is nearly as popular as Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket and is quite the "hot spot". The house is on a hill overlooking the island and the beaches are the best around. Now, sadly, the grandparents are gone but with the birth of my son, a fourth generation treks to the island.

Devil’s Lake State Park, Wisconsin
You can fly or drive across the nation, but to me summer is a time to celebrate what we have here in Wisconsin. For as long as I can remember my family spent a week each summer camping at Devil’s Lake in Baraboo, which is about 3 hours north west of Milwaukee.
Darkness overcomes your car as you enter the park through a down-spiraling tunnel of trees. At the park's center is a deep clear glacier lake enclosed by bluffs on either side. If you are not one for camping there are a plethora of rental cabins in the vicinity.
My favorite thing about this vacation spot is you can never see it all; it is an on going adventure. During my last trip I was introduced to Parfey’s Glen, which is a trail that follows a stream up a beautiful gorge to a small waterfall. How could I have missed such a place for the last thirty years?
I can’t wait to continue the traditional summer trek with my two girls.
